Periodontal Evaluation

Periodontal Evaluation

Periodontal Evaluations are dental tests administered for the early detection of periodontal disease and gingivitis. The majority of American adults live with some degree of gum disease. Unfortunately, many of them are unaware of the condition, which can continue to worsen without treatment. Early diagnosis of periodontal disease yields the possibility of early treatment, which can significantly improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, treatment for periodontal disease in its earliest stages is much less invasive than that of advanced periodontitis.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis occur when bacteria accumulate along and beneath the gum line. This causes the gums to become inflamed and sore, and they may bleed easily when irritated. Over time, untreated gum disease can infect both the gum tissue and the underlying bone, causing gum recession, bone deterioration, and potential tooth loss.

Early Detection of Gum Disease

Periodontal screenings are recommended twice yearly by the American Dental Association. They are included in routine dental check-ups as a preventative measure. Dentists can identify gum disease with a simple in-office screening. Usually, this includes a visual inspection of the gums for redness and puffiness, as well as to determine whether the gums have receded or begun to form pockets between the teeth. A periodontal screening may also include dental x-rays to determine whether the supporting bone structure beneath the gums have begun to deteriorate.
